A new series of human torso sculptures has been completed at the Xinyesheng Sculpture workshop for One of a Kind, a design company based in Mexico. The client asked for a modern work of art for interior decoration and art display, and the finished pieces are carved in natural travertine, a stone known for its warm color and distinctive pitted texture. In the production video, the design appears first as digital models, followed by a craftsman carving a torso by hand, and finally a group of finished pieces standing on black metal bases.
The torso is one of the oldest subjects in sculpture, and it remains one of the most flexible. Without a face or limbs to tell a story, the work depends entirely on the quality of the form, which is why it suits both classical collections and contemporary interiors.
During the design discussions, the client made their priorities clear. They wanted the natural muscle contours and proportions of the human body kept intact, in a style that is simple and natural. They did not want elaborate decoration or complicated details that would distract from the form.
That kind of restraint is demanding. When a sculpture has no ornament to hide behind, every transition between shoulder, chest, and waist has to be right. The viewer's eye goes straight to the line of the body.
The video opens on digital 3D models of several torso forms, shown from the front, back, and side. In the modeling stage, the design team fixes the anatomy and the pose, checking how the muscle groups of the chest, abdomen, and back read from different angles. Working on a model first means the proportions can be settled and approved by the client before any stone is cut.
The models also show the range of the project. Some torsos are upright and slender, others are broader and more muscular, which gives the client a choice of character within the same minimalist language.
After discussing material options, the client and the team settled on natural travertine. Travertine is formed from mineral deposits and is recognized by its layered color bands and the small pores and voids running through the stone. Those features give it a warm, honest appearance that feels very different from the cool, flawless look of polished white marble.
For a minimalist torso, this is a good match. The sculpture needs no added decoration because the stone supplies its own texture and tonal variation, and every piece ends up slightly different from the next.
The central stage of the video shows an artisan carving a torso by hand. Holding the piece in one hand, he works with a handheld rotary tool to refine the curves, and later uses an angle grinder to shape the form while the sculpture stands on a stone block. Dust rises from the stone as the outline of the shoulders, the chest, and the narrowing of the waist take shape.
The craftsman works from the anatomy of the body, with particular attention to the relationship between the shoulders, chest, abdomen, and waist. When these four areas are in balance, the line of the torso flows naturally from top to bottom, which is what gives a simple sculpture its elegance.
Once the carving is complete, the sculpture goes through several rounds of sanding and surface treatment. The aim is to bring out the beauty of the carved body without erasing what makes travertine special. The surface is smoothed so it feels pleasant to the eye and the hand, while the natural texture, the pores, and the color layers remain visible.
The finished pieces at the end of the video show this result. Warm cream and sand tones run across the torsos, and the natural markings of the stone stay visible on the surface. Each piece stands on a slim black metal base, which lifts it clear of the table or shelf and makes the form read as an object of display.
The project joins two traditions. The subject comes from classical sculpture, where the idealized body was a standard of artistic skill, and the treatment comes from contemporary minimalism, where simplicity and material honesty come first.
This makes the work flexible in use. It can stand alone as an art object, or it can be placed in hotels, galleries, design showrooms, and high-end residences, where a quiet, well-made sculpture adds character without crowding the room.
Xinyesheng Sculpture is a China-based sculpture manufacturer and custom design metal statue supplier with 13 years of experience in sculpture creation. Its R&D and design team has more than a decade of experience and works across stainless steel mirror-finish sculptures, marble works, weathering steel pieces, bronze casting, and tombstone artistry, integrating design, production, installation, and after-sales service into a single project process.
The travertine torsos for One of a Kind follow that process from the first digital model to the finished stone: a concept developed with the client, a material chosen for its character, hand carving by experienced artisans, and a finish that respects the stone. The same approach supports stone sculpture commissions for galleries, hotels, residences, and public spaces around the world.
Travertine is popular for modern stone sculpture because it combines workability with a strong natural look. It is softer than many other decorative stones, so fine curves can be carved and refined with relative ease, and it carries natural pores and banding that give a finished piece depth without any added decoration.
The material also asks for care. Its pores can be left open for a rustic look or treated for a smoother feel, and the carver has to judge how the stone's structure will behave while shaping thin or projecting areas. In the hands of an experienced artisan, these characteristics become strengths. The travertine torsos made for the Mexican design company show how a classical subject and a natural material can come together in a simple, contemporary sculpture.
