Few public artworks capture the imagination—and the spirit of a city—quite like the Charging Bull in New York City. Standing just north of Bowling Green in Manhattan's Financial District, this three-and-a-half-ton bronze monument has become an enduring symbol of financial ambition, resilience, and the American dream. Whether you're a trader on Wall Street, a tourist snapping a selfie, or an art enthusiast admiring its muscular form, the bull demands attention. But what makes this sculpture so iconic, and how does its creation connect to the ancient craft of bronze casting that artisans still practice today?

Created by Italian-American artist Arturo Di Modica, the Charging Bull was installed in December 1989 as an unsanctioned piece of guerrilla art. Di Modica spent two years and over $360,000 of his own money to craft the 16-foot-long, 11-foot-tall bronze beast. Its muscular frame, lowered head, and coiled posture convey raw power and forward momentum—an unapologetic message of strength and prosperity aimed at the American people after the stock market crash of 1987.
Today, the bull is one of the most photographed statues in the world. Visitors flock to the intersection of Broadway and Morris Street to touch its horns, nose, and—famously—its testicles for good luck. The sculpture has appeared in countless films, TV shows, and advertisements, cementing its place in pop culture. Yet beneath the tourist buzz lies a serious work of art, crafted with the same bronze-casting techniques that sculptors have used for millennia.
Di Modica originally cast the bull in his studio in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, using the lost-wax method to achieve its lifelike texture and patina. On December 2989, he and a team of friends trucked the sculpture to the New York Stock Exchange and installed it under cover of darkness—without a permit. The police impounded it later that day, but public outcry led the city to place it permanently at Bowling Green Park, where it has stood ever since.
The bull's bronze composition is no accident. Bronze has been the material of choice for monumental sculpture since antiquity because of its durability, malleability, and rich surface finish. When properly maintained, a bronze sculpture can last for centuries, developing a natural patina that protects the metal and adds visual depth. Di Modica's choice of bronze ensured that his message would endure through rain, snow, and the occasional act of vandalism. For a deeper dive into the techniques and materials behind bronze masterpieces, you can explore our guide on bronze sculpture types and selection.
Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, often with small amounts of zinc or lead. Its low melting point makes it ideal for casting intricate details, while its strength allows for large-scale structures that can withstand outdoor conditions. From the ancient bronze statues of Greece to Renaissance equestrian monuments, sculptors have relied on bronze to translate their vision into enduring form.
At our foundry, we have worked with bronze for over a decade, producing everything from life-sized animal figures to abstract human forms for clients around the world. The same lost-wax process that Di Modica used is still the gold standard in our workshop. We begin by sculpting a clay or wax model, creating a mold, and then pouring molten bronze at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. After cooling, we chase, weld, and patina the surface to achieve the exact finish our customers envision.

The Charging Bull's rough, dynamic surface texture is a testament to the skill of the artist and the foundry team. Every dent, wrinkle, and muscle fiber was painstakingly refined. When you commission a bronze sculpture, you are investing in a tradition that connects you to this same legacy of craftsmanship.
The lost-wax technique begins with a full-scale armature, over which clay or wax is applied to form the sculpture. Di Modica reportedly worked with a live bull model to capture the animal's anatomy accurately. Once the model is complete, a silicone or plaster mold is taken. Wax is poured into the mold to create a hollow wax replica, which is then invested with ceramic shell. The shell is fired to harden it and melt out the wax, leaving a cavity. Molten bronze is poured into that cavity, and after cooling, the ceramic shell is broken away to reveal the raw bronze cast.
Finishing is where the magic happens. Our artisans use grinding wheels, files, and sandpaper to smooth seams and define details. Then we apply chemical patinas—sulfides, nitrates, or heat—to create colors ranging from deep brown and black to green and blue. The Charging Bull's dark brown patina with hints of green gives it a classic, aged appearance that fits perfectly in its urban setting. For projects that require a different look, we offer custom patina development to match your design intent.
